Disable Spelling and Grammar Checks in Word

Microsoft Word is one of the most sophisticated word processors available in the market today. The use of word varies, from writing reports, making your CV or scholarly documents, sending letters or making envelopes, writing papers, homework and assignments, publishing books or compelling documents, inserting smart table of contents and much more.

Sometimes the grammar and spell check in MS Word saves our lives but there are other times that can be really annoying. If you’re writing something where the spelling and grammar check tool is a hindrance, here’s is the way how you can disable it for just the document you’re working with. So, let’s get started:

  • Open the document you want to disable spelling and grammar checks;
  • Click the “File” button;
  • Click “Options” on the left;
  • Click the “Proofing” tab on the left;
  • In the “Exceptions for” section, check the appropriate options listed there (depending on what you want to disable);
  • Click OK to close the options window.

Note: If you find that the “Hide grammar errors in this document only” option is greyed out, look at the “When correcting spelling and grammar in Word” section just above it and check if the “Mark grammar errors as you type” option is unchecked. If it is, you will not be able to hide grammar error highlighting unless you enable it first.

This method is applied to Word 2013, 2010 and 2007.

For Word 2003 follow the below steps:

  • Click the “Tools” menu;
  • Click “Options“;
  • Click the “Spelling & Grammar” tab;
  • Check the appropriate options listed there (depending on what you want to disable);
  • Click OK to close the options window.

You can always revert the process if you change your mind by unchecking the options you made earlier.
