Add Rows and Columns in Excel

As you play around with your data, you might find you’re constantly needing to add additional rows and columns. Sometimes, you may even need to add one and another time you need to add dozen of rows or columns.

So let’s get started and check how to add rows and columns in Excel:

Insert a Single Row Using the Mouse

  • Right-click on the row number below the point where you want the new row inserted. For example, if you want a blank row inserted between rows 4 and 5, right-click on the row 5 button, (see below photo);
  • In the pop-up menu, click Insert.

Insert a Single Column Using the Mouse

  • Right-click on the column letter right at the point where you want the new column inserted. For example, if you want a blank column inserted between column A and B, right-click on the column B letter (see below photo);
  • In the pop-up menu, click Insert.

Insert a Single Row Using the Keyboard

  • Select the selected cell’s entire row by pressing Shift + Spacebar;
  • Press Ctrl + + (plus sign) to insert a row above the selected row.

Insert a Single Column Using the Keyboard

  • Select the selected cell’s entire column by pressing Ctrl + Spacebar;
  • Press Ctrl + + (plus sign) to insert a column left of the selected row.

Insert Multiple Rows Using the Mouse

  • Drag over several row numbers, to select the same number of rows that you want to insert (as you drag, a pop-up will show the number of rows currently selected);
  • Once you select the number of rows that you want to insert, right-click on a any selected rows number (see below photo);
  • In the pop-up menu, click Insert.

Insert Multiple Column Using the Mouse

  • Drag over several column letters, to select the same number of columns that you want to insert (as you drag, a pop-up will show the number of columns currently selected);
  • Once you select the number of columns that you want to insert, right-click on a any selected columns number (see below photo);
  • In the pop-up menu, click Insert.

Note: Based on the number of rows or columns that you had selected, blank rows or columns will be inserted, above the first selected row.

Insert Multiple Rows Using the Keyboard

  • Select the selected cell’s entire row by pressing Shift + Spacebar;
  • Press and hold Shift, then use the Up arrow or Down arrow to select the number of rows that you want to insert;
  • To insert the selected number of rows, press Ctrl + + (plus sign).

Insert Multiple Column Using the Keyboard

  • Select the selected cell’s entire row by pressing Shift + Spacebar;
  • Press and hold Shift, then use the Up arrow or Down arrow to select the number of rows that you want to insert;
  • To insert the selected number of rows, press Ctrl + + (plus sign).

Note: Based on the number of rows or columns that you had selected, blank rows or columns will be inserted, either above the first selected row or on the left of the selected column.
