Disable USB Ports From Registry

With this tutorial, you can disable the access to your USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports on your Windows based PC to prevent people from taking out data without permission or spreading viruses through the use of USB (flash) drives.

Note: This process below involves tweaking a certain element of the Windows Registry. Be aware that changing any values improperly can cause errors or Windows to not boot, so if you’re not comfortable venturing into that area, you might to avoid to do this.

This trick also disables access to your USB connected peripheral devices. So, do not use it if you have USB connected keyboard and mouse. PS2 devices like keyboard and mouse will still work.

So to disable USB ports from registry, here is how:

Disabling the USB Ports

To disable USB ports, follow the below steps:

  • Click on Start\Run (or Win + R).
  • Type “regedit” without quotes (this will launch the Registry Editor).
  • Locate, and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\USBSTOR.

  • In the work area, double click on Start.
  • In the Value Data box, type 4.

  • Click on OK.
  • Close Registry Editor.

Re-Enabling the USB Ports

You can always reverse the process by re-enabling the disabled ports by follow the below steps:

  • Click on Start\Run (or Win + R)
  • Type “regedit” without quotes (this will launch the Registry Editor).
  • Locate, and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\USBSTOR.
  • In the work area, double click on Start.
  • In the Value Data box, type 3.

  • Click on OK.
  • Close Registry Editor.

The process works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10.
